Integrative somatic trauma treatment.

Bringing the body into emotional processing.

About Inner Compass Psychotherapy

Annelies Spykman LICSW

We each have an inner compass steering us toward what we need more or less of, what we are comfortable or uncomfortable with, and whether we need to move or be still. Our bodies have an amazing capacity to communicate if we allow our intuitive voice to be heard. I consider my work to be that of a guide, looking at your compass with you and gently prompting you to honor your body’s innate wisdom towards a more grounded and aligned self.

As an integrative somatic therapist with 15 years experience in the mental health field I utilize a variety of trauma-informed and evidence-based practices tailored to each person’s unique journey. My approach is to help you identify your goals, then to work through whatever is blocking your way to attain that ideal version of yourself.

My most common practices are EMDR, Somatic Meditation Therapy, and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and Attachment Based Therapy. I also pull from the wisdom and elements of Internal Family Systems, Attachment Theory, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Polyvagal Theory.

EMDR

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and is an evidence based practice used to treat trauma, depression and anxiety. Using eye movements or tapping, along with awareness of body cues, clients release long held negative beliefs about themselves while connecting with current triggers and reimagining positive future actions.

Somatic Meditation Therapy

Somatic therapy is the process of bringing the body consciously into emotional exploration, and bringing emotions consciously into the process of body healing. I weave somatic therapy in with guided meditation to facilitate a contained exploration of mind-body wellness.

CPP

Child Parent Psychotherapy is an attachment based treatment for children under age 6 who have experienced a trauma. The work is with the caregiver alone, or in dyadic play therapy with the child and caregiver together.

Attachment-Based Therapy

Attachment-Based Therapy explores early childhood relationships with caregivers as a framework for understanding current day beliefs and expectations of ourselves and the people around us, working to move toward a secure attacement system.

About my approach

My process is informed by the following basic understandings:

Trauma sensitive care

I believe that we are each greatly impacted not only by our own histories of abuse, neglect, abandonment and exploitation, but by the histories of our ancestors, cultures and communities that have lasting effects in our bodies and in the ways we experience the world.

 Holistic framework

I believe that a fully integrated therapy process is the only means by which we will experience lasting growth and healing. Therapy alone does not have lasting results. We must also incorporate time in nature, experiencing art, music, and movement, nutritious food, generous sleep, and connections with a trusted community.

Somatic awareness

Our bodies and minds are not separate entities. They are one unit. Often our bodies speak to us through pain or movement and express what we have been unable or unwilling to feel emotionally. We cannot heal the mind alone, we must invite the body into the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect in a session

My sessions start with a grounding or mindfulness practice, inviting you to put aside the stressors and distractions of the outside world and take a few moments to become present with your body’s sensations. Together we will develop a safe, calm space that will be your anchor during these practices. We will have a few minutes at the beginning of each session to discuss any recent changes or stressors, but the majority of the session will be focused on what is happening in the moment, in the room, using the time together to hone the practice of being aware of our physical and emotional sensations. I will prompt you to notice, reflect and share as you feel comfortable, weaving in reflections, exercises and various treatment modalities to meet your unique goals.

I prefer in-person treatment, as I give my best attention when I am in the same room as the person I am working with. Telehealth can be discussed for certain cases or circumstances.

Who I work with

I work with adults and adolescents ages 15+ who are working through depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms and attachment wounds.

I also have a small caseload of Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) cases, working with children ages 0-6 who have experienced trauma, and their caregivers.
